Welcome to our first Newsletter of 2024! We’re a bit later than usual as we have been waiting for confirmation of a couple of dates. We have a full programme of private functions and events, the following are our public concerts:

We’re pleased to be returning to Haden Hill Park in May for their 1940’s event. If you enjoy the music of the big band era, we’ll be dusting off our swing era pad to complement the re-enactors in the park. Admission is free so fingers crossed for good weather! Also in May the band returns to Bolehall Manor in Tamworth for Jazz at the Manor. It has been several years since we last appeared there so we are looking forward to returning.

We will also be returning to The Laurels in June for their annual jazz festival which takes place in the beer garden. This is always a popular event and once again admission is free!

The big event on the horizon is the Wigan Jazz Festival. The band will be headlining and has been chosen to close the festival on Sunday 14th July. Wigan is one of Europe’s premier jazz festivals and the first choice in the UK if you like big bands. Check out www.wiganjazzfest.co.uk for full details.

Looking ahead, the band will be appearing at Lichfield Jazz in October. This is the first time we have been in Lichfield since an appearance at the Lichfield Jazz & Real Ale Festival some years ago so we are looking forward to returning.

Our annual Christmas Spectacular will once again be at Benjamin’s Banqueting Suite in Halesowen. This is always one of our most popular concerts, so if you want to get into the Christmas spirit early, make a date to join us!

Details of all the above concerts are below and we do hope to see you at some of these gigs. We also have gigs scheduled for Stafford Jazz Society, The Corner Pocket Jazz Club in Coventry and Moseley Ex-Services Club, but we don’t have confirmed dates yet for these. We will hopefully let you know in our next newsletter.

See you soon!

Wow! What a summer! Cold and wet seems to sum it up! We regard ourselves as lucky that our outdoor gigs this year were at the beginning and end and hopefully will miss the rain. The Fabulous Forties event at Haden Hill Park was luckily a dry day and you responded in your hundreds to turn up and enjoy a great afternoon out..

We have two more outdoor events left this year; Gin ‘n Jazz with a small jazz quintet on August 19th and the annual jazz festival at The Laurels at the beginning of September. We have everything crossed for dry weather! Details of both events appear below:

We have a couple more public events to tell you about currently and they are both indoors so we will be safe from the British weather! October sees the band back at Moseley All-Services Club for a lunchtime concert and our annual Christmas extravaganza takes place at Benjamin’s Banqueting Suite in Halesowen. Once again, details below:

People seem to leave it later and later to book bands so please keep an eye on our social media pages for any new public events as they come in. You can find us on Facebook as Steve King Big Band and Twitter as @SteveKingBB. Don’t forget it’s free to join our mailing list for newsletters delivered to your inbox 3 / 4 times a year with all the latest gigs. Just send a request to info@stevekingbigband.co.uk and we’ll do the rest!

Don’t forget, live music needs you so please come and support us soon!

As we head out of the depths of Winter into Spring, we are already looking forward to our outdoor gigs we have so far this year. Fingers crossed for good weather as the band return to perform at the Fabulous Forties event at Haden Hill House on May Day plus the annual Jazz Festival at The Laurels in September. If you are in the Cheltenham area, we have a jazz quintet performing for a Gin & Jazz event in August! Details of all these events are below.

We’re also pleased to be returning to the Bonded Warehouse in Stourbridge as part of their jazz season in May. Once again, details below and we hope you will come along and support these public events.

Looking ahead, it’s never too early to start talking about our Christmas Spectacular! We’re back at Benjamin’s Banqueting Suite in Halesowen with a great big band take on the holiday season so we hope you’ll join us and get in the mood for the big day! Once again, details below:

Don’t forget, our 50th Anniversary CD is still available. This features a selection from all our previous recordings plus two brand new tracks recorded in 2021 for this album. The reaction has been very positive and it has been receiving a lot of air play on local radio stations. If you would like a copy, just send an email to info@stevekingbigband.co.uk and we will be in touch with the details. Price is £10.00 plus £2.00 post and packing. They are, of course, available at all our appearances.

Wow! What a roller coaster of a ride our 50th anniversary year was! Thank you to all who booked us and all who came along and supported us. It was was also great to catch up with friends old and new at our 50th anniversary concert, here’s to the 60th!

Our percussionist Helen Bool has had to step down due to other commitments, so we are pleased to welcome Julian Powell to the band to take over this important role. Come and check him out soon and say hi!

Public gigs are a bit thin on the ground at present but we have two to tell you about: October sees the band back at Moseley All Services Club with a Sunday lunchtime concert for those of you who prefer your concert attending during daylight hours! It’s been a couple of years since we were last here so we hope you will come along and show your support. Details below:

Well…..things are slowly starting to pick up following some sort of return to normality. Covid is still around but its effects seem to be much less severe now that the vaccination programme has been rolled out and it’s great to be back performing again!

With the Queen’s Jubilee plus our own 50th Anniversary extravaganza coming up we have a flurry of activity available for the general public to attend and we hope you will! We will be performing all styles depending on the event, so we hope you will find at least one to suit your own tastes.

May sees the band performing at a new venue for us, Kidderminster Jazz Club. This is a relatively new club in the area, based at Kidderminster Town Hall, and we are looking forward to appearing there for the first time. It has been some time since we played in Kidderminster. We hope those of you in the area will come along and support live music.

Due to the Wilson Hall closing, we had to move venues for our Christmas concert to Benjamin’s Banqueting Suite in Halesowen, and it was deemed to be a success. Consequently, we will be holding our 50th Anniversary concert there in May, plus returning for this year’s Christmas concert. Our 50th Anniversary concert will include a buffet and will give you a chance to chat to the members of the band in an extended break. We hope that many alumni will be in attendance and it should be a great night. Because of the buffet, admission will be by ticket only, details below.

Our 50th Anniversary CD is now available. This features a selection from all our previous recordings plus two brand new tracks recorded last year for this album. The reaction has been very positive and it has been receiving a lot of air play on local radio stations. We’re back!!!

When I prepared the last band newsletter in early 2020, coronavirus was starting to rear its head, but I never imagined it would lead to a 15 month shutdown of the whole world! I hope you have survived unscathed and are starting to get out and about once more.

We’ve been back rehearsing for several weeks and are looking forward to finally getting in the studio in October to record some new tracks for our 50th Anniversary album. Our 50th anniversary year starts in September and we have several things in the planning stage to celebrate. Most of these events were scheduled to be in 2021, but the pandemic means most of them will now take place in 2022. Please keep in touch as we put things into place.

We have two outdoor events in September to tempt you back to concert going, so we are hoping for good weather. The first is the annual jazz festival at The Laurels in Halesowen, and the second is another regular gig for us, the WWII event at Haden Hill Park. Both are Sunday afternoons and details are below.

In October we have another a couple of public events with smaller line ups which may be of interest. (Both have optional dancing if that’s your thing). We will be in Leicestershire performing with a 5 piece at a jazz and bier keller evening (yes really!) and a 12 piece line-up will be performing at Sutton Coldfield Town Football Club. We have done several gigs here and it’s always a sell out, so if interested, get in quick. Once again, details of both events below:

In November, we are pleased to be returning to Stafford Jazz Society for another concert of traditional jazz presented in Big Band style. This is always one of our most enjoyable events so we hope you will join us if you are from that part of the UK.

The one concert we really missed last year was our annual Christmas event so it’s back even bigger and better for 2021! The last few years have been held at the Wilson Hall in Cradley, but due to building problems, this venue has been closed and is due for demolition. (Nothing to do with us, honest!). Consequently, we will be returning to Benjamin’s Banqueting Suite in Halesowen. Some of you with long memories may recall we used this as a concert venue some years ago. It’s a nice big room with plenty of free parking so we hope you will make a date to join us to get Christmas off to a good start!

Looking ahead, we hope to release our 50th Anniversary CD in time for Christmas so please keep an eye on our social media pages. Don’t forget, you can have all our newsletters and other breaking news sent to you via email, just send your email address with a request to: info@stevekingbigband.co.uk. We have some great gigs coming up in 2022, so watch this space!

Covid-19 Update

There is still a lot of uncertainty when venues will re-open and in what format. All of our foreseeable gigs have been cancelled or postponed, and we are now reaching the stage where postponed gigs are being postponed for the second time! We will not be updating our gigs until things start to return to normal. You can keep up to date with the band on our social media pages. Follow the links for facebook and twitter.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

In April we are pleased to be returning to Stafford Jazz Society for another concert of traditional jazz presented in big band style. This is always one of our most enjoyable events so we hope you will join us if you are from that part of the UK.

In May, the world celebrates the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe. There are lots of events being planned and we are dusting off our 1940’s library ready to meet the demand! We will be taking part again in the WWII event in Haden Hill Park which this year is on the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend. On the bank holiday Friday we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary at Wooten Wawen, we hope you can join us.

In June we have another 12 piece line-up performing at Sutton Coldfield Town Football Club. We have done several gigs here and it’s always a sell out, so if interested, get in quick!

Looking ahead, the band will be back in the studio later in the year to record some tracks for our 50th anniversary album. (Yes, we can’t believe it either!). Most of these events will be in 2021, but please keep in touch as we put things into place.

Coronavirus: As we write, nothing is set in stone as the virus continues to spread. At present, all the above events are still due to take place but please double check either with the venue or us before travelling as events are being cancelled daily.

2019 year in review and upcoming news

Currently we seem to have a run of terrible weather and we’re glad the outdoor gigs have finished for this year!

We were lucky with our appearance at the annual Jazz Festival earlier in the year at The Laurels. It was pouring down whilst we set up, but the sun came out for the performance and the crowd materialised as the rain receded!

More recently we have had some great gigs: Wigan Jazz Club in September and Moseley All Services Club in October. The venue for Wigan Jazz Club has had a makeover since we last appeared there and there has been a change of management at Moseley, but they are great venues for big bands and we look forward to returning to both in the future.

Looking ahead, we have one more public concert this year. In December, we are returning to the Wilson Hall in Cradley for our annual Christmas spectacular. We performed here last year and the verdict was it was a hit! A great room for sound which has recently had a total make over. We hope you can join us this year to get Christmas off to a good start! Details appear below.

We have a couple of public appearances to tell you about for next year. In April we are pleased to be returning to Stafford Jazz Society for another concert of traditional jazz presented in big band style. This is always one of our most enjoyable events so we hope you will join us if you are from that part of the UK.

Thanks for your support this year, we hope to see you at a concert soon!

Welcome to our new updated website!

We have added new photos and videos which we hope you enjoy browsing. Please let us know what you think!

The band has had a busy year so far, but not many public gigs. We were at Jazzamatazz in Coventry for the first time in February and went down a storm! We will be back there next year, so watch this space!

In May, we returned to Haden Hill Park to take part in their 1940’s day and had a great time playing the hits of the great bands from WWII. The weather was a lot colder than last year but that didn’t stop several hundred people sitting to listen to the band.

We have several public gigs coming up in the second half of this year, so we thought we would mention them here:

We are outside again for the annual Jazz Festival at the Laurels in Halesowen in June. We have always been lucky with the weather for this event so fingers crossed this year! Together with great music from the band, there are real ales, real cobs and even Sunday Lunches available! Why not come along and make an afternoon of it?

We’re very excited to have been invited back to Wigan Jazz Club, and we will be kicking off their new season in September. Wigan is one of the top venues for big bands in the UK so we hope you will come along and support us if you live in that area, it’s always a great afternoon.

We have a 12 piece line-up performing in Sutton Coldfield in October. We have done several gigs here and it’s always a sell out, so if interested, get in quick! Also in October, the full band is back at Moseley All Services Club. We had a bad clash with the Birmingham Half Marathon last year which made it difficult for both the band and audience to reach the venue so we have ensured there is no clash this year! This is the premier venue in Birmingham for big bands so come along and support live music!

Finally, in December, we are returning to the Wilson Hall in Cradley for our annual Christmas spectacular. We performed here last year and the verdict was it was a hit! A great room for sound which has recently had a total make over, Once again, we would love to see you there.
