Newsletter Autumn 2008 As
I write this, Summer is dragging on, wet and miserable as seems to be the
norm nowadays. However, we have been
relatively lucky with our outdoor gigs.
Our concert at Caludon Castle Park in Coventry was the
inaugural event in Coventry’s Bands in the Parks series and was well attended
despite some heavy showers. The
audience came prepared with raincoats and umbrellas and enjoyed the concert
regardless. One of Lynn’s numbers was
recorded and is now on You Tube!
If you have access to the internet, type “Steve King Big Band” into
You Tube’s search facility and you can view the video. Alternatively, follow the link here: Caludon Castle The
Kings Heath Carnival has been upgraded to the Kings Heath Festival
and is now a much bigger event. For
the first time we could get the whole band on stage! It was just as well as guess what?... it
rained…. Once again, we have some
excerpts on You Tube. Follow the
links here: Sussudio
and Come Fly With Me May
Sargeant tied the knot in June and is now May Griffiths. Her husband is Nick Griffiths, who has
depped with the band several times on drums.
We now have a captive deputy! A
more permanent personnel change has taken place in the rhythm section. Trevor Davies has left to
concentrate on song writing, but I am sure we will see him again as a deputy
in the future. We are very pleased
that John Smith has come in on guitar to replace Trevor. John has depped with the band many times
on guitar and bass and is a most welcome addition to the band. He has worked with many bands large and
small as well as working as a solo artist.
Not only is John a superb guitarist, but a talented arranger as well,
so look forward to hearing some of his charts in the coming months. You
may recall last year at Kings Heath we introduced Gary Lewis to you
singing a couple of songs. Although
Gary has many years experience, this was the first time he had sung live with
a big band and he made a superb job.
We invited him back to Kings Heath this year and once again he wowed
the crowd. We have now put together a
show featuring our own major talent Lynn Dawes with Gary Lewis taking
the male vocal duties to feature some of the tunes associated with the great
song stylists. We will be featuring
this show at some of our theatre dates in the near future and hopefully will
have some more dates for you in the new year. The
first event in our Autumn schedule is a return to Solihull Arts Complex
on Sunday 14th September. This is always a well attended night and a great venue to come
and see the band. We hope you will
help make this night a success. We
hope you will come along and support us somewhere as it is all pointless
without you! Please find below
